Ordinary grace, repeated

Love God, love neighbor

We know these words

yet when we’re scared

the times uncertain,

we forget.

On grey, slushy days like today,

God’s grace still circulates, like the water coursing under a frozen creek.

Can you hear it?

Even now, grace is in circulation:

people who follow up to see how that medical appointment went

babies passed around

prayers from pews, kitchen tables and cars stuck in traffic

kindness at crosswalks and debit terminals

volunteers helping children learn to read

donors who fund schools and universities

people who deliver Meals on Wheels

farmers preparing for spring

gardeners ordering seeds.

Ordinary love for neighbor points to the source. I’m grateful that it’s not all up to me, yet I can share what I’ve been given. I wonder if extraordinary grace is just ordinary grace, repeated.
