Preaching with the stars: Psalm 19:1-6

In the northern hemisphere where I live, the days are getting shorter. This means more opportunity to see the stars.

The Psalmist is quite clear that “the heavens declare the glory of God” (Psalm 19:1 NIV) and who can argue?

I’m not proficient in naming constellations but I do have a favourite: Orion. You can see Orion from both the northern and southern hemispheres. When we lived in Brisbane, I could see Orion in the evening sky from our front porch and I always paused to admire it.

Psalm 19:1-4a Good News Translation proclaims:

How clearly the sky reveals God's glory!
    How plainly it shows what he has done!
 Each day announces it to the following day;
    each night repeats it to the next.
No speech or words are used,
    no sound is heard;
yet their message goes out to all the world
    and is heard to the ends of the earth.

Regardless of what is happening on earth, the stars’ revelation of God’s glory remains unchanged.

Why am I writing about the stars in a stewardship blog? Gratitude is foundational to generosity. When we appreciate God’s gifts to us, we can share.

What are you grateful for today? How might you share to encourage others? Remember that a gift to your local church supports a ministry of prayer, worship and encouragement.
