Jesus talks about money; we can too

“Jesus talks about money, we can too” is something I repeat often. It’s late September and there are 14 weeks left in the calendar year. What’s the mood at your church or charity?

Some churches and charities are welcoming new staff and painting the offices. Some are talking about inviting childcare providers to share their space and maybe even creating an indoor playground. Others are wondering how long their church will be around. Many are trying to keep the ship afloat, without plans for ship’s destination. “Jesus talks about money; we can too” feels applicable in all of those scenarios.

Today’s blog offers two ideas for talking about money: prayer and bravery.

Prayer

I’ve been writing this month, finishing a manuscript on the friend in Luke 11 who asks for three loaves of bread at midnight. Over and over, I’ve been praying and writing “Lord, help me to be generous.” I don’t know your context but here’s how I think that prayer might apply.

Individually, “Lord, help me to be generous” could be a prayer for help with deciding:

  • which causes to support,

  • where to volunteer,

  • when to say no and when to say yes,

  • how much to donate.

Organizationally, “Lord, help us to be generous” could be a prayer for help with:

  • talking about money,

  • managing building and property,

  • being a good neighbour,

  • supporting the wider church.

I’ve talked to many faithful donors and prayer informs their generosity. It’s never too late to start!

Bravery

Maybe because the book I’m writing is called Bold, I’ve been thinking about what it means to be brave. It’s not something that comes easily to me. You neither? I hope that prayer leads you to a prayerful conversation with good questions and lots of listening. If you need help speaking honestly at a meeting - instead of having the real conversation in the parking lot or the washroom, I saw this fun article by Clair O. Bowen via Faith and Leadership. No special tools or training required, except a chocolate bar. It’s an easy way to encourage courageous discussion.

If you’re not in the right space to even imagine talking about money, I think a Psalm, a song, a walk or some other grateful exploration of God’s gifts might help. I blog about gratitude often, this link goes to a collection of posts on the subject of gratitude.

“Jesus talks about money; we can too!” May you find encouragement in your work.
